Scullcap appears to have been introduced into traditional American medicine toward the end of the 1700s. Scullcap contains flavone glucuronides and flavanone glucuronides, including scutellarin and lateriflorin. Phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, are the predominant constituents.

Scullcap has been used to help relaxation and sleep, and is a source of antioxidants.
